Shortage of Engineers dogs India's astronomy programme.

The countrys astronomy research is heading for a crisis. There is a severe shortage of engineers for The Giant Metre Wave Telescope(GMRT) project.

Govind Swarup, our top astronomer says, there are only 8 PhD students against an actual scope of 50 and there is a 26% shortage of teaching staff at IIT against the sanctioned staff of 3800.

Something needs to be done to attract bright minds to research programmes.

Maybe a Carl Sagan type popular TV programme can do the trick.
